Providers are patients, too, and as healthcare organizations stare down a mounting clinician burnout problem, it will be critical they promote a culture of well-being. Prior to the pandemic, provider burnout and depression were reaching all-time highs. For many, the industry’s response to the coronavirus served to further exacerbate an already untenable situation for the nation’s caregivers. It has become clear that leadership plays a critical role in ensuring providers get the support they need to thrive in the workplace and achieve professional satisfaction.

At Northwell Health, Assistant Vice President of Employee Wellness Patricia Flynn oversees the organization’s efforts to address the well-being of its employees and families, much of which hinges on a culture that recognizes the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and financial needs of staff. Bringing together resources from multiple departments, Northwell Health’s Employee Wellness team is able to take a multi-pronged approach to provider burnout, delivering services to improve sleep, exercise, diet, socialization, resilience, and other aspects.

In this presentation, Flynn will review best practices for identifying and addressing factors in the way of provider well-being with the ultimate goal of preventing burnout before it harms those tasked with providing care to others.
